This is my work in progress Wednesday for this week. @ray.cover has had the subhilt for a few months to show his customers and students. It just sold and is back for Nita’s sheath work. And Ray also sent the engraved pen parts back to me. They are outstanding! To paraphrase Gen. Patton, “what did your mother do in the great World War 2, well you can say you didn’t shovel s$!t in Louisiana”! (Love that movie!) This is my mother. 1LT Carolyn C. Cage joined the Army Nurse Corps during the war and served as the triage officer for a field evacuation hospital (much like M.A.S.H. Units in the Korean War). Her hospital deployed to France n 1944 and were on and off the line until VE Day. The summer of 1945 saw them boarding the transport ships in preparation for the invasion of Japan when they were told of the atomic bombs. She came home at the end of the year and resumed her job at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. So thank some vets. They earned your respect and appreciation!

Work in progress Wednesday. Nita and I are on the road. We’re in Kentucky visiting friends. We toured the Wilderness Trail distillery. Man, I do like their bourbon, and their single batch rye is exceptional! It’s also work time. I’m showing my friend some more Knifemaking tips. Work in progress Wednesday finds me working on a blade for a subhilt fighter. It’s in PM154 stainless. I’ll start the first phase of hand finishing the primary bevel, then grind the clip. This helps keep that grind line a little crisper. And while at the pen show last weekend I discussed a dagger with a man who didn’t expect to see knives at a trade show for writing instruments. The design I sent him is a good deal simpler than most daggers I make, but still would be a pleasure to make. Work in progress Wednesday. I’ve made progress on the Dragon pen. The dragon on the barrel is pretty much finished except for coloring it. The cap top is ready for color as well. It needs a cap band. Plans are to blacken all this titanium. The clip is progressing. It’s made from stainless damascus. I still have to shape the lance point. It will be selectively etched. I probably can’t finish it by tomorrow evening, but will show it in Dallas this weekend. @nbdesigns_leather finished several pen slip cases. They are made from Wicket & Craig leather. And Deco Relic is finished. It will be displayed in Dallas, then off to @nibgrinder for a custom grind. Remember, the Dallas Pen Show is this Friday and Saturday.

I’m at the surgery center for my eye surgery. Nita went to a coffee shop to do some work. She saw this on a Kia in the parking lot. I haven’t seen a plastic winged hood ornament in 45-50 years!

It’s work in progress Wednesday…a day early. Tomorrow I’m having eye surgery. So here are a couple of pens I’m working on for the @dallaspenshow The first is the molten material from @abigailmarkov I’ve tentatively named this pen “Deco Relic”. It has some Art Deco elements. I did some experimenting with patinas to give that dagger clip a specific look. This pen is finished except for lacquering the metal to maintain the patina. I really like this particular material from Abigail!The last picture shows the dragon I’m carving. It is a tubular sleeve that sows the dragon to wrap around the barrel. Hope to have it finished in time for the pen show in a week and a half. So come to Dallas and see my pens and knives, September 27 and 28.

It’s work in progress Wednesday. Some of these are finished. The first is the Eléf “Summer” that is an order. I carved the waves on the band in the manner of Japanese woodblock prints. Next is the acrylic and Turkish walnut burl pen with copper trim. I used a patina agent to start its aged look. Then there is the simpler everyday writer in Alumilite. Light blues with silver streaks and a touch of light purple. All of these are finished except for the “test drive”. They there is Molten and it’s bronze sword clip. I have finished making the clip since taking the picture, and just have to decide how I want to patina the bronze and copper trim. I am really liking this material from @abigailmarkov ! Last is Dragon. Not much has been done since last week except to make the sleeve that will turn into a dragon. The deep red from Abigail seems well suited for a blood thirsty fire breathing beast! More pics of the finished pens later this week, and hopefully some progress on the dragon.
